Breaking news: ESPN.com reporting that Giants have released Pierce

February 11th, 2010 | by mike577 |

Official word has not come from the Giants, but I assume it will soon….ESPN.com is reporting that the Giants have released middle linebacker Antonio Pierce today.

Apparently, Pierce was in town having an MRI on his neck to see how his disc injury has progressed.  And while he appears to have healed nicely and plans to be ready to play in 2010, the Giants told him that his services were no longer needed and that they were going in a different direction.  Of course, the Giants have to be concerned about such an injury, but maybe could not come out and say it.  They also probably liked what they saw in second year man Jonathan Goff, and maybe are going to try and bolster that position through free agency or in the upcoming college draft.

Either way, it’s the end of an era.  Pierce was the heart and soul of the Giants’ defense for a few years and their defensive captain.  He will be missed more for his leadership than for his play on the field, which had deteriorated just a bit even before the injury was revealed.
