Filling shoes
January 6th, 2010 | by mike577 |Tom Coughlin apparently has a long list of potential candidates for the vacant defensive coordinator position, and you can bet he won’t be making the same hasty decision he did when he put Bill Sheridan in that role after Steve Spagnuolo left to become head coach of the Rams. That decision seemed to take all of five minutes last year, but after Sheridan failed miserably and contributed greatly to the Giants’ collective underachievement in 2009, he was swiftly shown the door on Monday afternoon.
Since then, a few names that have surfaced as possible replacements are Dick Jauron, who has held a few head coaching positions, most recently with Buffalo for the first half of this season before getting canned. Jauron and Coughlin have worked together before, in Jacksonville. Jets’ linebackers coach Bob Sutton is also apparently a hot candidate, but he would not be able to interview for the job until the Jets’ season is over. Additionally, the guy who replaced Jauron in Buffalo, Perry Fewell, is also interviewing with Coughlin for the DC position, and Fewell reportedly is also being interviewed by the Bears for the same role.
That’s just three names, and apparently the list is much longer than that, but alas, we do not have access to it. You have to believe Coughlin, though he doesn’t want to be too hasty, would also like to fill this position and begin preparation right away for the 2010 season. So it should be interesting to see how far the Jets advance in the playoffs.
Who do you like? I’m not sure I like anyone but the guy who left last year–Spagnuolo. That dude turned the G-men D into a version of the fierce, pass-rushing, intimidating D that has been a Giants’ trademark over the course of their history. But he’s coaching the Rams, at least for the time being.
