Learning from Titans

December 1st, 2009 | by mike577 |

Everyone is looking at the Tennessee Titans and our New York Giants as teams going in opposite directions, and for good reason.  The Giants began the season 5-0 and were on top of the world, and have lost 5 of 6 games now to sit at 6-5 and on the outside looking in to the playoff picture.  Meanwhile, the Titans began the season 0-6 and have now won five straight.  This, after their last loss being a 59-0 rout at the hands of New England.

How in the world does a team turn it around like that?  Well, the Titans inserted Vince Young at QB for Kerry Collins and really made no other changes.  They were banged up on defense a bit but not enough to make that much difference.  Now they are on a roll and being considered as a playoff contender, when a month ago they were a contender for a top draft pick.  Young is playing out of his mind and it’s contagious.

I’m telling you all this because I live in Nashville now, so I get to watch the Titans a lot, and I’ve seen this transformation the last few weeks.  They are proof that if you have the talent, you can turn things around.  And I really believe the Giants have the talent.  They played great against Dallas, they played mostly well enough to beat the Chargers, and they really should have beaten the Cardinals too.  The team that got blown out against Philly and Denver is not exactly representative of our G-men, the same way that 59-0 game was not a good indicator of the Tennessee Titans.

To the credit of any Giants’ player or coach you ask, they still believe.  6-5 is not the end of the world.  Heck, they sill have a better record than Tennessee.  And you can’t ask for a better opportunity than three straight divisonal games in December.  I sure haven’t felt confident these last few days, but watching the Titans Sunday gave me renewed belief that it can be done, and I’m not ready to throw the towel in.

Are you?
