Pierce could miss rest of season

November 21st, 2009 | by mike577 |

antonio-pierceA day or two after Tom Coughlin was beaming about all of his players practicing for the first time this season and cracking a joke about, “well, we haven’t showered yet”…..shocking news hit the team hard about LB Antonio Pierce possibly missing the rest of the season.

Pierce, who suffered what was termed a burner in the Arizona game October 25, had an MRI yesterday on his neck that revealed a bulging disk, and the team said he would be out indefinitely.

“I”m shocked with what I heard from the doctors this afternoon,” said Pierce.  “I had no idea that what happened a few weeks ago could keep me off the field.”

He added that he would listen to the doctors and do everything they suggested so that he could get back on the field as soon as possible.  The Giants have not yet announced who would start at middle linebacker on Sunday.

Pierce, who is the captain of the defense and is often shown barking play calls to his defense the way Peyton Manning does, is a hard guy to replace in the lineup.  It’s not so much his general skills as much as his leadership that will be missed, and hopefully it won’t be more than a few weeks before Pierce is back out there.
