Getting healthy at the right time

November 19th, 2009 | by mike577 |

When the Giants lost to the Chargers 11 days ago, the overwhelming consensus was that they played much better than they had in the three previous weeks in losing to New Orleans, Arizona, and Philadelphia, respectively.  One reason for that is that LB Michael Boley returned, as did DT Chris Canty.  This week, CB Aaron Ross is expected to return as well, fortifying a secondary that has been absolutely decimated by injuries and inconsistency.  In addition, other players who have been nursing injuries –including QB Eli Manning, TE Kevin Boss, RT Kareem McKenzie and DE Justin Tuck–have had an extra week to rest at just the right time of the season.

And getting healthy heading into late November with tough, physical games looming is literally what the doctor ordered for this football team.  Of course, the other school of thought here is that the break could have disrupted any rhythm the team generated against San Diego, but for the most part everyone agrees that the Giants needed to heal, both physically and mentally.

Getting healthier now was also important because after playing the Falcons on Sunday in a game with NFC wild card implications, the Giants will travel to Denver to play the Broncos four days later on Thanksgiving night.  Being healthy and properly conditioned is a  necessity at that point, especially considering the thin Colorado mountain air.
