Another writer puts things in perspective
November 13th, 2009 | by mike577 |I don’t always pay as much attention as I should to what everyone else is writing about the Giants, but I probably should. And you should also pay attention to what Sports Illustrated’s Don Banks had to say, because it sure does make a lot of sense.
Basically Banks talks about how things have turned around and turned sour so quickly for the Giants, that everyone’s collective head is spinning. In fact, since that Week 17 loss to the Patriots in 2007, the G-men went 21-5 through the first five weeks of this season. Which makes four straight losses somewhat remarkable.
But then Banks goes on to talk about what I brought up yesterday–the NFC playoff picture. And that picture keeps losing teams, as the Bears lost to the Niners last night to give both teams a 4-5 record. The Giants sit directly behind the Falcons and Eagles, who are both 5-3 and have played one less game this season to date. So basically, wins against those two teams will help the Giants’ cause immensely. But because of the way things change so quickly in the NFL, and because there are a lot of teams with 5 losses or more already in the NFC, it’s not crazy to think the Giants can still make the playoffs.
The thing is, however, they still do have to win some games and they have to do so quickly coming out of the bye week. What has turned south so quickly has the potential to turn back north.
