Manning Reportedly to Sign Multi-year Extension
August 5th, 2009 | by mike577 |The Giants are not practicing today, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t big news coming from Albany. While GM Jerry Reese is clear that with no signed contract, there is nothing to discuss, word has leaked out that QB Eli Manning is about to sign a 6-year, $97 million deal that will keep him in New Jersey throught the 2015 season. Reese, again while reminding everyone multiple times that there is no signed deal yet, fielded questions about Manning and about the team’s cap space or lack thereof.
“He’s a franchise quarterback,” said Reese. ”He’s done everything we ask him to do. He’s come in, he takes a lot of flack from you guys and he just keeps going. He does what we ask him to do on the field. He does what we ask him to do off the field. He’s a good football player.”
When asked about the team’s projected payroll for 2009, Reese quipped, “Projected payroll? What’s the cap for this year? We don’t save a lot of money, we give it all out.”
And that’s one of the reasons I love this team. Reese is not only smart with the team’s finances, he also realizes that Manning has done more than helped the Giants win a Super Bowl…he’s the face of the franchise in the biggest media market there is, and he’s a good guy who is a consummate student of the game. He’s going to have his detractors, but I am 100% behind this extension…you know, if and when it becomes official.
