Pierce speaks; Coughlin upbeat about practice

August 4th, 2009 | by mike577 |

LB Antonio Pierce talked to the media briefly this morning about his role in the Plaxico Burress situation.  He said he was not sorry about how he handled the situation in helping a friend and teammate in need, but he was sorry that he got himself into that situation in the first place, and that he learned a lot from it.  Pierce was not indicted by the grand jury yesterday, freeing him to join his teammates and get back to playing football with no black clouds hanging over his head.  If you consider that Pierce just wasn’t himself on the field last season after the incident, we can only be encouraged by having Pierce back at 100%.

Meanwhile, HC Tom Coughlin was upbeat after morning practice, even if he was talking at one point about his own impatience with his offense.  He discussed that, yes, some great plays were made on the field, but that after each great play, he wants his players to get back into the huddle and focus on the next one.  He also mentioned that TE Kevin Boss looks good both as a blocker and receiver.  He’s happy with how the secondary has been aggressive, saying that he expects that from them all the time, and he also said Osi Umenyiora has looked good so far.  QB David Carr had his arm wrapped during practice but Coughlin said he didn’t know of any issues with that.  Coughlin also talked about rookie William Beatty and how even though everyone kept telling him the pros would be different, he didn’t realize how different until he had to line up across from Umenyiora in spring OTAs.
